With Gala, Jérôme Bel continues the work he began with Disabled Theater: penetrating deeper into the workings and exclusion of individuals and bodies, and tapping into all the resources unique to theatre, to broaden the scope of all it can reveal. Galabrings to the stage a mix of professionals and amateurs of all ages and all walks of life, and mobilises their shared desire to express themselves through dance. Galapays homage to the simplicity of domestic dance, practiced at home, without mastery or technique, removing the authority of “dancing properly”, all for the pure pleasure of performing on stage. Galaupsets and questions the critical view, as well as the comfort of the spectator, by adhering to Samuel Beckett’s famous dictum: “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
