Founder and musical director of the ensemble Cappella Mediterranea, Leonardo García Alarcón is also a brilliant choir director, as witnessed in the exceptional accomplishments of the Namur chamber choir since he took over as its director. As artist in residence at the Dijon Opera, what could be more natural than to apply his extraordinary talents for the benefit of the house ensemble ? This meeting will focus on Monteverdi, through works from the two great periods of the composer’s creative life. Sharing the same dedication to Pope Paul V, the Missa in illo temporeand the Hymn Ave Maris Stellaof 1610 sought to display the composer’s mastery in all religious styles. Published in 1641 when Monteverdi was at the twilight of his creative career, the Selva morale e spirituale — from which came the Laudate pueriand the Magnificat— is the final testament of the Maestro di Cappella di San Marco in the domain of sacred music.
