Requiem op. 9
FAURÉ Cantique de Jean Racine op. 11
After Fauré’s Requiem in 2017, the Dijon Bourgogne Orchestra, the Dijon Opera Choir and its director, Anass Ismat, join forces with an amateur choir of adults and children for another great mass for the dead from the 20th century. Like its older cousin, Duruflé’s Requiem adopts a certain rejection of the emphatic and the terrifying. It also excludes the Dies Iraethat illustrates the torment of souls on Judgment Day, and provides a more clement vision of divine disposition. It takes its inspiration primarily from the Gregorian plain-chant for the Catholic mass for the dead, from which it derives almost all of its thematic material. It thus accomplished, in its time, a form of sovereign equilibrium between tradition and modernity, sensuality and piety, luxuriance and sobriety.
